What exactly is a bed and breakfast? Bed and breakfasts are lodgings with a twist.

It’s a sort of hybrid between a luxury hotel and a private home, embodying the best of both worlds. A B&B is generally a small establishment with three to six guest rooms instead of the 50 to 100 or more found at most hotels. The owners live on-site and interact with travelers as if they were invited guests rather than anonymous temporary room numbers. And guests are treated to many little deluxe touches like personal concierge services, fresh flowers in the rooms, and chocolates on their pillows. And, of course, there’s the “breakfast” in bed and breakfast, a sumptuous home-cooked repast that comes with the price of the room and is served each morning in a communal dining room.

No wonder bed and breakfasts are so popular and becoming more so all the time.

Generally, a B&B is not the reason for a guest to visit an area, but in some cases B&Bs have done such a masterful marketing job that this has changed. People read articles in a variety of publications and sometimes are attracted by a bed and breakfast and plan to visit the area specifically to stay at that B&B.

Travelers usually are attracted by recreational, cultural or historic sites, or by business they have in a particular area. Business travelers, especially women, sometimes seek out bed and breakfast accommodations as an alternative to the typical lodge, motel or hotel facility available in an area. B&Bs provide the traveler with a different lodging experience as well as what many consider a safer environment.
